Training your new puppy is one of the best ways to build a strong bond and ensure they grow into a well-behaved adult dog. Starting with the basics is key to setting them up for success.
1. Sit
This is usually the easiest command to start with. Hold a treat near your puppy’s nose, move your hand up, and as their head follows the treat, their bottom will naturally lower. Once they are sitting, say “Sit,” give them the treat, and offer plenty of praise.
2. Stay
Once your puppy has mastered “Sit,” you can move on to “Stay.” Ask them to sit, then open your palm in front of you and say “Stay.” Take a few steps back. If they stay, reward them. Gradually increase the distance over time.
3. Come
The “Come” command is vital for safety. Put a leash and collar on your puppy, go down to their level, and say “Come” while gently pulling on the leash. When they reach you, reward them with a treat and affection.
Remember, consistency and positive reinforcement are the most important parts of training. Keep sessions short and fun to keep your puppy engaged!
